Bio

I broke into newspapers as a 16-year-old stringer covering Friday night high school football games for the Tucson Citizen in Arizona. More than 20 years later, I still approach journalism with the same energy, enthusiasm and passion. My career has spanned news, sports and entertainment, covering everything from the Cleveland Indians Spring Training to lawmakers and issues in our nation's capital.

For the past 14 years, I've worked as an editor and reporter in Northwest Florida. Through this experience, I've developed an extensive network of sources and knowledge of the area. I've also researched and written a variety of in-depth and investigative stories dealing with the environment, government, courts, economy, education, healthcare and politics. One environmental piece examined the somewhat controversial practice of removing dead head logs from rivers and explained how one Panhandle cracker used his bare feet to find and remove the valuable timber from the Blackwater River. He would pray that what he was feeling was a heart pine tree, not an alligator. Another story, which exposed the misuse of Taser guns on citizens by law enforcement, led to the removal of one police officer and stricter guidelines for the Pensacola Police Department's use of the weapon.

In addition to writing and reporting, I've served as editor of a Pensacola alternative newsweekly for nearly eight years. While writing most of the weekly's main cover stories, I've also planned additional news and features stories, assigned stories to writers and freelancers, edited editorial copy throughout each issue, collaborated with the art director to develop creative covers and story layouts, written a political news column, written and posted stories daily on the weekly's news blog, and performed many other duties.

While working full-time, I have also freelanced for the New York Times and Associated Press. I also freelance as a producer for a community affairs TV news program for WSRE, a PBS-affiliate.
